Nursing Home Negligence Violations
Recent studies show that nearly 3/4th of all severe nursing home patient violations can be concentrated down into 12 states. In descending order: Texas, Illinois, Arkansas, Washington, New Jersey, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Just because Arizona does not make the top 12 states to violate nursing home patient care, does not mean that your loved one in an Arizona nursing home is safe. As a matter of fact, in Maricopa County, there is not one nursing home that is free of violation. Of the reported 76 nursing homes in Maricopa County according to 2003 statistics, each has preformed a care violation. Violations ranged from mild discomfort to severe pain, and even death.
Studies also show that patients in nursing home facilities owned by for-profit companies seemed to have more and worse violations than those owned by government and non-profit facilities.
Of the more than 500 repeat nursing home serious violators, 83% were owned by for-profit companies. For-profit homes also had a higher rating of infections and pressure sores than those owned by government or non profit nursing home facilities.
Nursing homes monitored by nursing home patient family members and councils tended to have a higher use rate of physical restraints, but a lower rate of patients in pain.
